6 WAYS TO GET MORE OUT OF YOUR JOB

Harris-Courage & Grady, PLLC May 5, 2017

Almost everyone needs to have a job. But it can be challenging to find a job you like!

No matter what your job is or how you feel about it, you can get more from your work.

Sometimes people think they need to change jobs to be happy. However, that isn’t necessarily true. You can be happier and more fulfilled right where you are.

Your Job Is What You Make It.

It can be easy to convince yourself you don’t like your job. It’s a little harder, but much more rewarding, to convince yourself that you love your job.

Here are some tips to help you feel better about what you do for work:

  1. Make a gratitude list. What do you have because of your job (and the income it provides) that you wouldn’t have without it? Your housing, your car, and your food are some ideas. Have any awesome coworkers? Focusing on things you’re grateful for can minimize negativity.

  2. Work hard. Giving less than your best effort can increase your negative feelings about yourself. Arrive on time, and give your job your best effort while you’re there. Then you can go home feeling satisfied that you accomplished something.

  3. Make goals, and discuss them with your supervisor. Want a promotion? Let your supervisor know, and ask them what you can do to help achieve your goal. Employers like to employ dedicated people with vision.

  4. Leave work at work. If you’ve got a work problem, don’t bring it home with you. All it will do is prevent you from enjoying your time with your family and friends.

  5. Leave personal problems at home. Bringing your personal problems to work will distract you from the job you need to do. Set aside specific time outside of work to deal with your personal problems; you’ll perform better at your job if you do.

  6. Ask for help if you need it. You don’t have to carry burdens alone. Being honest about your challenges and communicating them positively can help you find solutions. Just be sure you really want a solution, not just to complain. Also remember that harassment, safety, or other legal issues should always be reported.

When you feel “stuck” in a job you don’t enjoy, you can still make the best of it with a positive attitude and a good work ethic. A job doesn’t have to be your life’s career. You may change it later. Remember that your job provides you with the ability to pay your bills and feed your family. That’s a lot to be thankful for, and it gives your job value and worth.
