WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU LOSE YOUR JOB

Harris-Courage & Grady, PLLC Nov. 15, 2017

Losing your job is a hard thing to go through.

Many of our clients file bankruptcy because of debts they incurred while struggling through a job loss.

We want to help people recover from difficult financial situations as quickly as possible.

Here are some things you can do to help you get through a job loss until you can recover a good full-time income:

  1. Apply for Unemployment. It won’t replace your full income, but it will provide you with something to live on while you search for a new job. You can learn more and apply at https://labor.ny.gov/unemploymentassistance.shtm.

  2. Visit a Career Center. New York State operates several career centers throughout CNY with people available to help you find your next job. They can help you polish your resume as well as inform you about job opportunities in your field. You can find your closest career center, as well as online job finding resources, at https://labor.ny.gov/careerservices/CareerServicesIndex.shtm.

  3. Reduce your Expenses. Take a serious look at things you can live without until you can replace your former salary. Some good areas to check for ways to reduce your spending include

    • Television

    • Transportation

    • Groceries

    • Eating out

    • Electricity and gas

  4. Make a New Budget. Don’t let a difficult financial situation now create bigger problems down the road. Make a new budget to account for your new income. It will help you avoid extreme levels of debt.

  5. Sell Things You Don’t Need. Get extra cash by clearing out the clutter and selling things you don’t need or use. It’s easy to sell with Craigslist or eBay, and a little extra cash can make a big difference when you’re out of a job.

  6. Finding a Job is Your New Job. A new job will not just fall into your lap. Job search experts recommend spending full-time hours searching and applying for a new job.

  7. Stay Positive. Losing your job and the uncertainty that comes with searching for a new job can be emotionally exhausting. Remember to stay positive, and take time to take care of yourself.

Being out of work is a difficult, but temporary situation. Be proactive, and you’ll get through it. Who knows? You may even look back on this as a positive experience that pushed you into a new and better career!
